Lessons from Mary Magdalene

As we approach the holiest and most glorious feast of our Faith, the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus, I would like to share with you a picture that is very precious to us as Sisters of the Resurrection.  The above picture of the Risen Jesus as He appeared to Mary Magdalene, hangs in our Convent.  It is one of my favorites because it reminds me that Mary Magdalene, a woman, was one of the few friends of Jesus who was brave enough to stand at the foot of His cross.  It reminds me that Mary Magdalene, a woman, was the first person Jesus appeared to after His Resurrection.   It reminds me that Jesus sent Mary Magdalene, a woman, to tell His disciples the Good News of the Resurrection.

I hope that this picture reminds each of you, as students and as women, of the special role Jesus calls you to in His Church and world today.    As women you are called to be faithful witnesses even when others turn away in fear or shame.  Like Mary Magdalene you are called to stand at the foot of the cross as signs of comfort.  As women you are called to trust and wait for the fulfillment of God’s promise even when the world seems dark.  As women you are called, like Mary Magdalene, to believe in the power of God’s love to conquer even death.  As women you are called to carry the message that Jesus is alive and present in our world and in our hearts today!
